On the 24th June at 8:30am I left my house to take my daughter to school and was back home by 9:00 am.
My husband had gone to work so there was just me and my 3 year old son in the house.
I am a smoker and I do have lighters in my bedroom but I had locked my door right at the top with a padlock and just above it I hung the keys.
My children have window locks on their bedroom windows and I also have them on the bathroom window.
I let them play upstairs and go to the toilet as they please.
On this particular morning my son went up tp the toilet while I carried on cleaning downstairs and then I heard a scream.
My heart sunk
I just knew something was wrong by the sound of his scream.
“Mummy, mummy” he screamed
I ran upstairs calling him “where are you where are you?”
As I got upstairs my bedroom door was open.
I ran straight in
My bed was on fire
At the bottom of my bed I had a sofa which my son was sat on saying “mummy it’s hot it’s hot”
There was a wall of flames between us
My body froze for about 30 seconds and I realised there was no flames on the floor beside my bed so I slid through and pulled his arm until he hit the floor and I dragged him out.
I ran down stairs unlocked my front door but had to get my cat and phone, I knew I had a minute to safely get what I needed to be.
I ran outside and dialled 999 and just broke down with fear and panic.
I looked at my call list and I had dialled 999 at 9:38am. It took less than 3 minutes for all this to happen.
Never leave lighters within reach of children, this is proof that they are dangerous, we had a lucky escape.
After reading the debate Emma did about smoking around children and seeing that some mums even smoke in their bedrooms made me want to share my own experience and dangers.
