My girl is 3 and a half years old and she has quite a few health problems which result in milestone delays. Firstly she is hypermobile which means she is very very flexible and can get in the strangest positions. It doesn’t effect her much but she has more trips and falls because of it.
She also has a heart murmur, a ventricular septal defect (VSD) which is a defect in the ventricular septum, the wall dividing the left and right ventricles of the heart which means she has a 4mm hole in her heart which she has had since 3 months old, this has to be checked every 6-12 months.
At her 2 year review, they said her speech was very behind so she was referred to a paediatrician and speech therapy. Slowly she is getting better with her language but is still behind other children of the same age. She never gives up trying, she has a deletion on chromosome 5, which could be linked to her delay.
It’s been stressful at times, questioning if the problems she has to face have been my fault, thankfully my partner and I talk things through about it so it stopped me blaming myself. I always put on a brave face and get through it for her. I worry a lot about her. I worry when she starts proper school will she get the support she needs, will she make friends properly because of her speech?
She is at the moment being tested for autism because of her speech, not understanding things and not listening to instructions but despite all of these things, she is the nicest, polite, sweetest girl ever who doesn’t let these get in the way. She is an amazing big sister to her baby brother, she is so caring towards him. She is just amazing and I love her to bits and wouldn’t change her for the world.
